Event Description

The European Le Mans Series (ELMS) season draws to a dramatic close on October 19th, 2024, with the 4 Hours of Portimão. This night race, held at the challenging Algarve International Circuit in Portugal, will be a thrilling culmination of a year-long battle between LMP2, LMP3, and the newly introduced LMGT3 classes.

The 4.6-kilometer (2.9-mile) circuit in Portimão is known for its elevation changes, flowing corners, and a long straight perfect for testing top speeds. Practice sessions on October 14th and 15th will be crucial for teams to find the perfect setup for their cars under the Algarve sun. Qualifying on October 15th will set the stage for the main event, with pole position offering a strategic advantage for the grueling 4-hour race that stretches into the darkness.

As dusk descends and the floodlights illuminate the track, the true test of endurance begins. The LMP2 class, featuring powerful closed-cockpit prototypes, will be the stars of the show. Teams like United Autosports, Prema Orlen Team, and W Racing Team will be vying for championship glory in a race that could come down to the final corner.

The LMP3 class, featuring agile open-cockpit prototypes, will showcase the skills of the next generation of endurance racers. These drivers will be pushing their limits to gain valuable experience and potentially upset established teams.

Adding a new layer of excitement this year is the LMGT3 class. These modified grand touring cars from renowned manufacturers like Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini promise close racing and diverse strategies. Expect fierce battles throughout the night as these machines fight for class victory.

Throughout the race, pit stops will be a critical ballet under the floodlights. Teams will execute lightning-fast tire changes, driver swaps, and refueling to maximize track time and maintain a competitive edge. Strategy will be paramount, with teams needing to consider not just car performance but also tire wear, fuel efficiency, and the unpredictable nature of a night race.

The 4 Hours of Portimão is more than just a race; it’s a test of endurance, teamwork, and the perfect blend of driver skill and machine performance. With the dramatic backdrop of the Algarve night and the pressure of a championship hanging in the balance, this ELMS finale promises to be an unforgettable motorsport spectacle.
