Event Description

Intercontinental GT – Suzuka 1000KM 2025

The Intercontinental GT Challenge (IGTC) Suzuka 1000km, set for September 12-14, 2025, marks a triumphant return to Japan’s iconic Suzuka Circuit after a six-year hiatus. This endurance race, reviving a storied legacy that began in 1966, reverts to its classic 1000-kilometer format—approximately 172 laps around the 5.807-kilometer track—shifting from the 10-hour configuration last seen in 2019. As part of the five-round 2025 IGTC season, it joins elite events like the Bathurst 12 Hour and Spa 24 Hours, showcasing the world’s top GT3 machinery and drivers.

Suzuka’s demanding layout, with its figure-eight design, high-speed corners like 130R, and technical sections like the Degner curves, promises a grueling test of skill and strategy. The race pits manufacturer-backed teams and privateers against each other, featuring brands like Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes-AMG, and BMW. The 1000km distance—equivalent to roughly 6-7 hours of racing, depending on pace and interruptions—emphasizes endurance, tire management, and pit-stop precision, hallmarks of GT racing’s golden era.

The event kicks off with practice and qualifying on Friday and Saturday, culminating in the main race on Sunday, September 14. Fans can expect a festival atmosphere, with Suzuka’s grandstands buzzing as Japan’s passionate motorsport community welcomes back this historic fixture. The race also carries added weight as a late-season IGTC round, potentially influencing the championship standings for both drivers and manufacturers.

After cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic and its absence since, the 2025 Suzuka 1000km signals a resurgence of long-distance GT racing at one of Asia’s premier circuits. Its return, announced in June 2024 by SRO Motorsports Group, reflects a commitment to blending tradition with modern competition, ensuring a spectacle of speed, strategy, and stamina under the late-summer Japanese sun. For enthusiasts and competitors alike, it’s a can’t-miss chapter in Suzuka’s rich racing tapestry.
